Astronomers observed the pair using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, with the newly discovered neighbors taking top spot in proximity to Earth and each other, cutting the previous record holders’ distance in half.

Don’t panic, though: the history-making super-supermassive blackhole collision is still around 250 million years away, so it’s probably one for our cyborg successors to watch out for…
