New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has formally apologised to Pacific Islanders who were targeted for deportation in the mid-1970s. Known as the “dawn raids”, people were rounded up for overstaying their work visas in often aggressive home arrests. Efeso Collins, an Auckland councillor and social commentator, tells The World while the raids took place almost 50 years ago, the impact of the government’s actions is still being felt.
