As an emergency medicine physician at NYU Hospital in New York City, Dr. Kamini Doobey has always known that death is part of the territory in trying to care for the city’s sickest. #Coronavirus #Covid19 #CoronavirusNYC
But it hasn’t been like this – patients stricken with coronavirus, on ventilators, and no visitors allowed because of strict protocols to prevent its spread.
“So often a patient will be on their deathbed, dying alone and it’s been incredibly painful to see the suffering of family members who I call from the ICU, hearing the tears, crying with them on the phone,” said Doobey.
“Too many people are dying alone with absolutely no family around them,” she said. “This is one of the most horrific things.”
There are now more than 37,000 confirmed cases in New York state.
The figure does not represent all COVID-19 cases, since an unknown number of infected people have not been tested.
“I go home every single night and think about what if we had to decide between two patients?
Doobey says her hospital currently has enough ventilators for its patients, but predicts doctors may soon have to choose between which patients receive the desperately-needed equipment and those who don’t.
