Sky News Australia published this video item, entitled “New South Wales – Victoria border reopens after 15 weeks” – below is their description.
New South Wales has reopened its border with Victoria – after 15 weeks of being closed – making it the only state in Australia to welcome residents from all jurisdictions around the country and New Zealand. Officials removed the border checkpoint which divided the twin towns of Albury and Wodonga for several months, as well as 26 other border town checkpoints along the Murray River. Albury Mayor Kevin Mack said the move came as a big relief for many families who he saw suffer during the hard border closure. “It’s been just a real nightmare for a lot of people, I’ve seen … just a whole litany of stories that I’ve been part of and experienced and don’t want to experience again,” he said. Festivities in Albury kicked off a midnight – when the border between the two states officially came down – with fleets of vehicles parading across the border line to celebrate. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she felt very confident in the border reopening and hoped it would be the last of its kind seen for a long time. “We never want to see this ever again, we hope this is the last time that in our lifetime this border is closed,” she said. Me Berejiklian also spruiked the state’s mandatory QR code system for venues – which will be introduced today – saying it would help keep the state safe. Sydney Airport expected 4000 passengers on 24 flights from Melbourne to pass through the airport today as officials pre-empt a mass exodus from Victoria as families reunite after months of separation. Virgin Australia also issued a statement this morning, saying “we remain hopeful that borders will continue to safely reopen, and more Australians return to the skies in time for Christmas.”
