New sexual consent laws in New South Wales will allow accused rapists to be convicted if they cannot show they took steps to obtain consent. The affirmative consent model has been announced by the state government in an effort to deliver justice to survivors of sexual assault. It’s expected the reforms will be introduced in the coming weeks.

Minister for Education & Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell, NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller, Saxon Mullins from Rape & Sexual Assault Research & Advocacy and Attorney General Mark Speakman announced the details of the new legislation at a media conference in Sydney.
