  • FRANCE 24 English published this video item, entitled “New exhibition celebrates the ‘divas’ of the Arab world” – below is their description.

This week, we’re at the #ArabWorldInstitute in #Paris, where a new exhibition is celebrating the divas of the region: from #OumKalthoum, to #Dalida, to Fairuz. These women were not just the greatest Arab artists of the 20th century – some of them were also pioneering feminists in deeply patriarchal societies. We take a closer look at the legacy of #Egypt’s Oum Kalthoum. We also give you a sneak peek of the exhibition and delve into the ideas behind it, with co-curator Élodie Bouffard.

Millennia-old monuments sit along the fertile Nile River Valley, including Giza’s colossal Pyramids and Great Sphinx as well as Luxor’s hieroglyph-lined Karnak Temple and Valley of the Kings tombs.

The capital, Cairo, is home to Ottoman landmarks like Muhammad Ali Mosque and the Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiquities.
