The new Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce has surprised many colleagues by urging coalition MP’s to rally around managing the rise of China. During his first party room meeting since returning the job, he warned Australian freedom could be challenged. Peter Hartcher from the Sydney Morning Herald says some of Mr Joyce’s comments on the country are “mildly troubling” because they suggest “Barnaby is thinking about politicising Australia’s China policy” which has historically been bipartisan.
