Global News published this video item, entitled “New Delhi residents struggle for hospital beds, as crematoriums expand for India’s COVID-19 victims” – below is their description.
Authorities in New Delhi added makeshift platforms to crematoriums as they struggled to cope with the influx of coronavirus victims.
The Indian capital is suffering from a spike in coronavirus infections and crematoriums across Delhi said they were completely full, asking grieving families to wait.
Ambulances carrying bodies of COVID-19 victims queued outside crematoriums for hours waiting for their turn.
In the country’s capital, people were crying out for help as there was no room for their relatives in the city’s hospitals.
People outside one hospital said the helpline numbers listed on government websites were not responsive.
“My father is dying. I can’t afford another loss. Yesterday, I lost my younger brother,” said one woman outside the newly constructed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel COVID-19 centre.
India is in the grip of a rampaging second wave of the pandemic, hitting a rate of one COVID-19 death in just under every four minutes in Delhi as the capital’s underfunded health system buckles.
