People in the southern Pacific French territory of New Caledonia have narrowly voted to stay part of France in the second referendum on the matter in three years. There has been long-running tension between the Indigenous Kanak peoples, who largely seek independence, and the descendants of colonial settlers, who largely remain loyal to Paris.
