Al Jazeera English published this video item, entitled “Net zero by 2060: China’s bold new carbon emissions goal” – below is their description.
It had been hoped that 2020 would be the year the world got to grips with tackling the climate crisis. But the coronavirus pandemic has delayed anticipated global negotiations. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday renewed his support for the Paris climate accord and called for a green focus as the world recovers from the COVID-19 crisis. Xi announced that his country would effectively balance out its carbon emissions with measures to offset them before 2060. It is the first time the world’s biggest emitter of carbon dioxide has pledged to end its net contribution to climate change. On Thursday, world leaders will try to get the talks back on track, against a backdrop of increased wildfires, floods and hurricanes, and disappearing polar ice. Al Jazeera’s Nick Clark reports. –
