The New US Defence Secretary James Mattis dropped a metaphorical bombshell at a NATO meeting in Brussels: if the rest don’t pay more, the US may “moderate its commitment”. This comes after Donald Trump in January declared NATO to be “obsolete”. There is concern in capitals across the Atlantic that the organisation which had been a bastion of world peace and security for nearly 70 years should be so dismissed by the businessman-in-chief.
