ABC News (Australia) published this video item, entitled “National security laws in the spotlight as secret inquiry into Witness J begins | ABC News” – below is their description.
The Law Council of Australia has called for changes to the country’s national security laws, to ensure cases are not kept secret from the public, like that of so-called “Witness J”.
Witness J, dubbed by the courts as “Alan Johns”, was convicted and sentenced in complete secrecy in 2019 for five offences related to the mishandling of classified information.
The inquiry is considering if the law should be changed to create a more open system, but one that still protects national security information.
