The Solar Orbiter probe, a joint venture between The European Space Agency (ESA) and Nasa, finally launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Monday after 20 years of planning.
It lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 11:03 p.m. ET (0403 GMT Monday), kicking off a 10-year voyage.
“This was picture perfect. And suddenly you really felt you are connected to the rest of the solar system,” Daniel Mueller, a scientist for ESA who worked on the mission, said after lift-off.
It begins a two-year journey towards the centre of the Solar System, from where it can orbit The Sun, observing the powerful outbursts of plasma that can bring such disruption to Earth.
