There are fears dangerous chemicals are present in a major European river after tonnes of fish washed up dead.

Officials have warned of a major environmental catastrophe in the River Oder, which runs from the Czech Republic to the border between Poland and Germany before flowing into the Baltic Sea.

Dead fish have been washing up on the banks of the river for a fortnight with authorities pointing the finger at possible mercury poisoning.
