South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Myanmar under the military junta 2 years on: Thousands dead, economy in shambles, future uncertain” – below is their description.
February 1, 2023, marks two years since Myanmar’s military staged a coup and seized control of the popularly elected government. Since the takeover, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing’s junta has remained embroiled in a bitter civil war with opposition groups across the country, resulting in thousands of casualties and mass displacement. Under military rule, the nation’s currency has fallen 40 per cent, while opium production, driven by economic instability, has soared to a nine-year high. Experts doubt the junta will make good on its promise to hold elections by August 2023.
