Signs of dissatisfaction with the country’s military takeover were seen and heard on the streets of Myanmar’s biggest city, Yangon, as residents banged pots and honked car horns late on February 2, 2021. Myanmar’s army has seized power and declared a year-long state of emergency. The country’s de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was detained as authorities accused her political party of failing to address fraud relating to its recent election win.
