Myanmar anti-government protesters cancel new year festivities to hold demonstrations

Global News published this video item, entitled “Myanmar anti-government protesters cancel new year festivities to hold demonstrations” – below is their description.

Dozens of anti-government protesters held flowers as they marched through the streets of Dawei on Tuesday. The flowers would normally be displayed during festivities to mark the new year’s festivities in the country, which began Tuesday.

But opponents of the military government across the country cancelled traditional festivities and instead showed their anger through silent displays of defiance and small protests across the country. The five-day holiday is usually celebrated with prayers, a ritual cleaning of Buddha images in temples, the displaying of ornate flowers and high-spirited water dousing on the streets.

As protests continue in the country and the military cracks down on demonstrators, with arrests being made and dozens killed, the United Nations human rights office said Tuesday it feared the crackdowns risk escalating into a civil war like the one seen in Syria.
