South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Myanmar anti-coup protests death toll climbs to over 50 as junta revokes media licences” – below is their description.
Thousands of people took to the streets of Myanmar’s biggest city of Yangon in defiance of a night curfew on March 8, 2021. Earlier in the day, at least three protesters were killed elsewhere in the country.
According to the United Nations, more than 50 people have been killed by security forces since the military staged a coup on February 1, and detained elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi of the National League for Democracy (NLD).
Among those killed was NLD official Khin Maung Latt, who died in police custody on March 7 the day after he was taken from his home in Yangon. As part of the junta’s latest push to quell unrest, licences of five media outlets have been withdrawn to deter reporting on the protests.
