Twenty-two mummies were paraded through Cairo on their way to the new National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. Leading up to the multi-million-dollar event, several roads along the route were resurfaced to keep the journey as smooth as possible. The ancient kings and queens were given their own modified cars for the 5km joyride, each fitted with special shock absorbers and climate control.
Egypt’s mummies are surrounded in superstition, with many believing they bring curses. In the weeks leading up to the event, #Egypt suffered a number of disasters, including a deadly train crash and the blockage of the Suez Canal last week. The string of unfortunate events led some to wonder whether the transfer of the pharaohs is to blame.
