Al Jazeera English published this video item, entitled “Morna: A musical form symbolising longing for African motherland” – below is their description.
Every year, the fifth of May is celebrated as African world heritage day.
The musical form called Morna has been recognised by UNESCO as a cultural heritage since 2019.
It originated in Cape Verde in the 18th century and spread around the world by its diaspora.
Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque travelled to the island of Sao Vicente to see how the genre has come to symbolise a longing for the motherland.
