Global News published this video item, entitled “More than 1,300 inmates freed from Congo prison in coordinated attack” – below is their description.
Armed men helped 1,300 prisoners escape from a central jail in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in a coordinated attack on Tuesday, the town’s mayor said, blaming rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces. Only 110 of 1,456 inmates, including a number of militia fighters, remained following the simultaneous early morning assaults on the Kangbayi central prison in Beni and the military camp defending it, said mayor Modeste Bakwanamaha. Bakwanamaha said the attack from ADF fighters stormed the prison in large numbers and managed to break down the door. The ADF, a Ugandan armed group active in eastern Congo since the 1990s, has killed more than 1,000 civilians since the start of 2019, according to U.N. figures, despite repeated military campaigns aimed at destroying it. Islamic State said its militants from its Central African Province franchise carried out the attack, according to its AMAQ news agency. The group has claimed responsibility for several suspected ADF attacks in the past. UN experts, however, have found no evidence of a direct connection between the two groups.
