Mooncake sales have been soaring across China in the few weeks leading up to the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on October 1 this year, as domestic consumption continues to rebound in the country where the threat of Covid-19 has kept weakening. Different from previous years, the mooncake markets in eastern provinces such as Zhejiang and Anhui have become more environmentally and economically conscious this year. Major mooncake makers have all cut back on the production of luxury gift boxes, catering to a growing trend for more cost-effective festival treats. Forgoing lavishly overpackaged mooncake boxes, supermarkets in Ningbo City, Zhejiang, have opted to promote brands that are wrapped in much simpler and environment-friendly packaging and that are sold for lower prices. Liu Jin, sales director at a local supermarket in Ningbo, said these less packaged mooncakes which come with much reasonable price tags appeal to a growing number of consumers these days. “We don’t sell those 500-600 yuan per box mooncakes anymore, including those overpackaged with wooden cases. So the prices are lower, unlike the previous exorbitant prices that came with fancy packaging,” he said.
