Monkeypox: About 50% of vaccine supply used, Canada passes 1,000 cases, Tam says | FULL

Global News published this video item, entitled “Monkeypox: About 50% of vaccine supply used, Canada passes 1,000 cases, Tam says | FULL” – below is their description.

Of the more than 99,000 monkeypox vaccines supplied to provinces and territories, more than 50,000 people have been vaccinated – about 50 per cent of supply used – Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said on Friday.

She said that number comes as Canada surpassed 1,000 cases, with 511 found in Ontario and another 426 in Quebec as of Aug. 10.

She also said that while some provincial chief medical officers had indicated early signs of a “slowing down of that accelerated epicurve,” it was still “too soon to tell” if the virus was plateauing in the country.

Monkeypox is a viral infectious disease related to smallpox, from which most people recover on their own after a few weeks, but people can become very sick and could die in some circumstances, according to PHAC.

Tam said that the Public Health Agency was also exploring the option of stretching out the monkeypox vaccine into fractional doses, something the U.S. has begun to implement, however they won’t be using the method yet. She said they want to get more information on the method first and are focused on delivering first doses to communities that need it the most first.

Following a World Health Organization (WHO) announcement on July 23, which declared monkeypox a global health emergency, the U.S. also declared monkeypox a public health emergency on Aug. 4.

Asked why Canada had yet to do so or if such a declaration may come in the future, Tam said Canada had mechanisms already in place to tackle the outbreak. She said unlike the U.S., there’s a different approach in terms of accessing authorities and funding in Canada and provinces are able to declare crises or emergencies at their own levels.
