Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian on Tuesday denounced the BBC for maliciously editing the comment of a U.S. scholar to smear China over the so-called “debt trap”, urging it to stop fabricating false information about China.

Deborah Brautigam, director of the China-Africa Research Initiative at Johns Hopkins University, recently published an article debunking BBC for discarding all evidence she presented about why the Chinese “debt trap” in Montenegro, Kenya, Zambia, and other places is groundless, which presented the false impression that she supported the so-called “debt trap diplomacy.”
