On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, King’s eldest son said that while we have still not achieved the “Dream” his father once famously spoke about, there has been progress.
“We still have a long way to go,” Martin Luther King III told an audience at the National Action Network celebration on Monday.
U.S. President Joe Biden, speaking at the same event, told Americans there is “a lot of unfinished work to do,” saying King’s life provided guidance on repairing division, extremism and injustice.
They were also joined by Rev. Al Sharpton, who said that Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not a holiday, but a “holy day.” He noted that many fought to get this day to be recognized.
Meanwhile, parades around Washington, D.C. and Houston, Texas were held to honour the day — King’s birthday.
A Baptist pastor and civil rights activist, King worked to end legal segregation of Black people in the United States and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 at age 35 — the youngest man to have received the award.
