Minnesota authorities are expected to provide an update on the police shooting of a Black man that occurred Sunday in Brooklyn Center, about 16 kilometres from where George Floyd was killed almost a year ago.
The shooting, which occurred during a traffic stop, resulted in protests that saw about 100 people, some visibly upset, confronting police in riot gear. Some people also vandalized two police vehicles. Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowds.
After nightfall, a few hundred protesters gathered outside the suburban police department. Officials said police responded later in the evening to break-ins at several stores in a shopping complex, where broken glass littered the ground outside multiple shots.
According to police, the shooting occurred after police pulled over a man for a traffic violation and found he had an outstanding arrest warrant. As police tried to arrest him, he re-entered the vehicle. One officer shot the driver, who then drove several blocks before striking another vehicle and dying at the scene.
