A Philippine Air Force Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft with 96 people on board was involved in a deadly crash on July 4, 2021. The military transport plane, that was carrying combat troops assigned to fight Muslim militants, disintegrated and burst into flames while trying to land on the southern island of Jolo. Some 47 soldiers on board and three civilians on the ground died in the crash, and another 49 people were rescued. Military officials said the plane may have overshot the runway while trying to land at Jolo airport in Sulu province, and that witnesses saw some soldiers jumping out of the plane as it came down.
