“The problem here goes back to 2017. Once the #Trump administration moved this embassy to #Jerusalem, the #Palestinians boycotted the administration. There are no talks officially between the Trump administration and the Palestinians. The Palestinians think the US is illegitimate. That’s how they see this administration. There’s no doubt that if the Palestinians wanted to stop it, they could say we will offer a counter offer to the Trump plan. I am not here to advocate this way or that way at all. As an analyst, I see that the Palestinians could stop this whole process by saying we are here with a counter offer. But they see if we do a counter offer we are ending our boycott from 2017 and therefore we are legitimizing Trump and therefore we don’t want to legitimize Trump so we are not going to do a counter offer.”
David Makovsky, the Ziegler Distinguished Fellow and director of the programme on Arab -Israel relations at the Washington Institute of Near East policy.
