Press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said “White House operations made the assessment it was safe” for President Donald Trump to travel Thursday to New Jersey for a fundraiser, despite learning that his top aide Hope Hicks had tested positive for the coronavirus earlier that day. Trump had been in close contact with Hicks all week, including traveling to the presidential debate on Tuesday and his rally the next night in Minnesota. McEnany told reporters outside the White House Friday that White House operations made the assessment “in consultation with others,” but didn’t state who the others were. Earlier Friday, chief of staff Mark Meadows said a number of White House staff were “pulled” from the New Jersey trip after learning about Hicks’ positive diagnosis. McEnany also said she “had no knowledge” of Hick’s status when she briefed reporters Thursday. The press secretary wouldn’t say what symptoms the president is experiencing, stating only that they’re “mild.” “He is hard at work. We’re having to slow him down a little bit,” McEnany said.
