The total number of U.S. layoffs caused by COVID-19 has reached 44.2 million people. That comes even as businesses try to reopen, and analysts warn of continuing damage to the world’s largest economy. New data showed another 1.5 million workers filed for unemployment benefits last week. The massive layoffs have become routine since shutdowns to stop the coronavirus from spreading began in mid-March. Some workers are back as states reopen, but the total number of jobless for the week ended June 6th remains well above any figures seen during the global financial crisis.
