Sky News Australia published this video item, entitled “Marise Payne ‘extremely pleased’ Australian released from ‘unjustified detention’” – below is their description.
Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne says the Melbourne academic detained unjustly in Iran and released in a prisoner swap is a testament the “diplomatic corps” served Australia well. Kylie Moore-Gilbert, a 33-year-old lecturer from Melbourne, was arrested on espionage charges in 2018 when trying to leave Iran after attending an academic conference. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison. “We have consistently rejected the grounds on which the government of Iran arrested and detained Dr Moore-Gilbert and we continue to do so,” Ms Payne said. “The Australian people can be absolutely assured that their diplomatic corps has served us all with utmost professionalism and discretion. “This outcome demonstrates, for me, and I think to Australia, the value of professional, determined, discrete work of officials in resolving complex and sensitive consular cases.”
