The Philippines passed the 10,000 mark for new daily Covid-19 infections for the first time, on March 29, 2021. Manila and surrounding provinces were put back under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), the highest tier in its containment protocols, for the first time since May 2020. The government is trying to quell the new surge in cases, after earlier showing signs of controlling the epidemic. Meanwhile, the country accelerated its vaccination drive as shots arrived from China.
