Global News published this video item, entitled “Man charged with 1st-degree murder in Toronto police officer’s death” – below is their description.
A 31-year-old man is facing a charge of first-degree murder in the death of a Toronto police officer with 31 years on the job after he was struck by a vehicle during an incident at city hall’s underground garage on Friday.
Const. Jeffrey Northrup died when he and his partner responded to a priority call at the parking lot just after midnight. It was initially classified as a robbery call but was upgraded to a stabbing. Interim Police Chief James Ramer said the suspect was initially outside of the vehicle when officers approached him, but didn’t elaborate how the rest of the incident unfolded. It has been reported other occupants were in the vehicle as well. Northrup and his partner were taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. His partner was treated and released with minor injuries.
Morganne Campbell reports on the incident and Sean O’Shea takes a look at the reaction to Northrup’s death in the city, the province of Ontario and beyond.
