Malaysian hip-hop artist SYA is taking on stereotypes with her debut single PrettyGirlBop. The 25-year-old aims to take on the “patriarchal mindset” through the taboo-breaking song to break stereotypes of Muslim women. SYA, whose real name is Nur Batrisya Mohammad Nazri, is the first Southeast Asian female artist to sign with the music label Def Jam, which is behind global stars from Rihanna to BTS and Justin Bieber. On December 3, 2021, she dropped her bilingual single MADAME on major streaming platforms.
