Malaysia enacts controversial security law

A controversial security law that went into effect in Malaysia on Monday has given sweeping new powers to a council led by Prime Minister Najib Razak.

The government says it needs the legislation to help fight what it calls terrorism, but critics say the “draconian” law threatens democracy.
