Al Jazeera English published this video item, entitled “Making Olympic debut, karate fights for future place in Games” – below is their description.

Karate is making its Olympic debut in Tokyo on Thursday.

The host nation is set to dominate the event with eight gold medals up for grabs.

The ancient Japanese martial art will get a long-awaited shot at persuading a global audience that it belongs in the Olympics after being snubbed three times in the past – and by the Paris 2024 organisers as well.

Al Jazeera’s Andy Richardson reports from Tokyo, Japan.
