A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the northern Philippine island of Luzon on July 27, 2022, killing at least four people and injuring more than 60 others, according to officials. Buildings in the quake zone were damaged and strong tremors were felt throughout the capital Manila. The Philippines is prone to natural disasters and is located on the seismically active Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped band of volcanoes and fault lines along the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
