Police in Belarus’s capital Minsk have cracked down on protesters hours after President Alexander Lukashenko was sworn in in a surprise ceremony. Lukashenko had been under mounting pressure to resign after last month’s disputed election. Several EU countries and the US say they do not accept him as the country’s rightful president.
