In tonight’s edition: longtime Congolese opposition leader Tshisekedi passes away, at least 94 psychiatric patients died last year in South Africa due to negligence; and we speak to Angolan rapper and dissident Luaty Beirao.
DR Congo’s main opposition leader dies in hospital in Brussels aged 84. Etienne Tshisekedi was one of the country’s top advocates of democracy and had been due to play a key role in the country’s political future.
Also, there’s outrage in South Africa as a government report reveals the scale of neglect of psychiatric patients in Gauteng province. At least 94 people died after having been moved to unlicenced facilities, most from hunger, thirst and pneumonia.
And we speak to Luaty Beirao, the Angolan rapper-turned-activist whose five-week hunger strike when jailed for holding a book club gained international attention. He tells us about his hopes for a country of contradictions.
