Nearly a century after it was first erected – and almost four years after it sparked a deadly weekend of violence in the US city of Charlottesville, Virginia – the statue of Robert E Lee has been removed.

The city’s council say it is a step towards racial justice.

Onlookers, including Black Lives Matter supporters, cheered – as the figure of the confederate general was pulled down from its pedestal.

Al Jazeera’s Andy Gallacher reports from the US capital, Washington, DC.
