Locals built and preserved the Niya Wetland to battle the moving Taklamakan Desert in norhwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, known as the world’s second-largest shift-sand desert. According to statistics, Xinjiang’s vegetation cover declined from 2002 to 2009, but it saw an uptick between 2009 and 2016. Is the desert in southern Xinjiang suffocating the region’s vegetation?
