Live: Niya Wetland – ‘warrior’ in the desert

CGTN published this video item, entitled “Live: Niya Wetland – ‘warrior’ in the desert” – below is their description.

This might be the last look at some greenery before the CGTN crew enters the Taklamakan Desert. Locals built and preserved the Niya Wetland to battle the moving Taklamakan Desert in norhwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, known as the world’s second-largest shift-sand desert. According to statistics, Xinjiang’s vegetation cover declined from 2002 to 2009, but it saw an uptick between 2009 and 2016. Is the desert in southern Xinjiang suffocating the region’s vegetation? Join CGTN’s Li Jianhua to find out more. #AmazingXinjiang
