In this week’s #HeadlineBuster, China marked the 70th anniversary of entering the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea at the DPRK’s request. Almost 2.9 million Chinese People’s Volunteers soldiers fought in the war, and at least 197,653 of them lost their lives. It’s a somber anniversary, given the fatalities on all sides and the destruction to the Korean Peninsula, that no country, including China, wants to repeat. Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed carrying forward the great spirit demonstrated by the Chinese People’s Volunteers (CPV) army in the war, but some media have been interpreting China’s message as a provocation to the U.S. as the two countries clash over issues ranging from trade, tech, and the South China Sea.
