At least 11 people were killed when lightning struck a watchtower on Amer Fort in the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan late on July 11, 2021. The victims were domestic tourists visiting the 12th century structure also known as Amber Fort on the outskirts of the state capital Jaipur. Lightning strikes are common during India’s monsoon season, which runs from June to September. During the same weekend, similar incidents killed at least 42 people in the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh and 11 others in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. The fatalities pushed India’s nationwide death toll from lightning strikes so far in 2021 to at least 76 people.
