Liberals survive confidence vote, avert imminent election with NDP help

Global News published this video item, entitled “Liberals survive confidence vote, avert imminent election with NDP help” – below is their description.

One year after Canadians sent the Liberals back to work governing with a reduced minority mandate, the government has survived a key confidence vote that had threatened to send Canadians back to the polls in the midst of a second wave of coronavirus pandemic. The Liberals secured the backing of the NDP and the Greens in defeating a Conservative motion seeking to create a special committee tasked with probing the propriety of government spending. The Liberals had decided to make the vote a confidence matter, meaning the success of the motion would have technically been deemed to declare the House of Commons did not have confidence in the government, even though Conservatives had asserted it was not intended to do so. David Akin looks at the Conservative motion that triggered the vote and how other political parties responded, while Mercedes Stephenson breaks down what happened on Parliament Hill. Voting is a method for a group, such as a meeting or an electorate, in order to make a collective decision or express an opinion usually following discussions, debates or election campaigns. Democracies elect holders of high office by voting. Residents of a place represented by an elected official are called “constituents”, and those constituents who cast a ballot for their chosen candidate are called “voters”. There are different systems for collecting votes, but while many of the systems used in decision-making can also be used as electoral systems, any which cater for proportional representation can only be used in elections.

In smaller organizations, voting can occur in different ways. Formally via ballot to elect others for example within a workplace, to elect members of political associations or to choose roles for others. Informally voting could occur as a spoken agreement or as a verbal gesture like a raised hand or electronically.
