It’s been over four decades of ups and downs between China and the United States. But a Cold War is not desirable between the world’s two largest economies. During difficult times, relations do need to take a breather. There are times diplomats hold talks, other times they use the universal language of music. Ambassador Nicholas Platt helped bring an American orchestra to China for the first time in 1973. It was a time before China and the U.S. officially normalized relations. They overcame many obstacles to make it happen. When legendary conductor Eugene Ormandy raised his baton in front of Chinese audiences, the power of music crossed boundaries and differences. As the Philadelphia Orchestra returned to China for its 12th tour, CGTN host Tian Wei caught up with Ambassador Platt, who is now in his late 80s, and took a trip down memory lane.
