A total of 10% of all positive cases in the country in the past week have come from the East Midlands city, which means the easing of lockdown across England on Saturday will not take place in Leicester.
Leicester’s mayor Sir Peter Soulsby, once a sceptic of the local lockdown, says he understands the need for firm action.
But there is still uncertainty about the exact areas which will be included within the lockdown boundary.
