The Trevallyn Dam in the heart of Launceston has been powering homes for around 70 years. It has also been trapping short-finned eels behind its walls, preventing them from migrating downstream.
Hydro Tasmania has built a $1 million eel bypass, allowing the eels to pass through the wall and onto freedom.
