In the myriad of stories that have emerged in recent years about historic child abuse, the case of children in care in the London borough of Lambeth stood out.
For decades, looked-after children were sexually, physically and racially abused in the borough’s children’s homes.
Lambeth apologised and set up a ground-breaking scheme of redress, to compensate those who suffered at the hands of social workers and others who should have looked after them.
Now Newsnight has learned that the local authority has accepted that more than 700 children were abused in its homes – and has paid out nearly £50 million in compensation.
Next week, the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse will turn its attention to Lambeth and what happened over many years to children in care.
