7NEWS Australia published this video item, entitled “Labor’s land tax for Queensland property owners ‘set aside’, Treasurer Cameron Dick speaks to media” – below is their description.
Labor’s cancelled plan to introduce a new tax for Queensland property owners would have worked if interstate premier’s had willingly handed-over property ownership data to the Queensland Government, says state treasurer Cameron Dick.
Under plans announced by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s government, people who owned property in Queensland and interstate, like New South Wales, would have faced land tax bills in possibly the tens of thousands of dollars from June 2023.
Yesterday, the Queensland premier told a national cabinet media conference that she was over-ruling her treasurer and ‘setting-aside’ Labor’s new planned property tax. Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick says this was the first that he had heard that his boss was changing plans for the land tax.
“The premier is the leader. She makes those calls. And she had the benefit of speaking to other first ministers and leaders about it. And, that’s the decision she’s made. And that’s the decision that we’ll implement…Would it be better to do it on an interjurisdictional national basis? ‘Of course.’ But, the unwillingness of other states to participate has led to the premier forming that view”, said Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick at a media conference in Brisbane today.
NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet yesterday said the decision by Queensland premier to ‘set aside’ Labor’s new Queensland property tax was a ‘great decision.’
Last week, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet vowed to resist requests from the Queensland Government to provide data that would enable it to hike land taxes for thousands of residents across the border. Mr Perrottet pledged to block attempts by Queensland to access relevant NSW data.
