Global News published this video item, entitled “La Palma volcano: Lava, ash continue to spew after crater collapses” – below is their description.
Red-hot lava and thick clouds of black smoke spewed from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on Spain’s La Palma for the 16th day in a row on Monday. Two newly opened cracks formed late last week, creating different paths for molten rock to take down the mountainside. On Sunday night the north side of the crater collapsed, with jets of lava exploding from the volcano.
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Sunday that the government would help rebuild La Palma, where the volcanic eruption has destroyed hundreds of buildings and forced thousands to evacuate their homes.
During his third visit to La Palma since the eruption began on Sept. 19, Sanchez said the government would approve 206 million euros ($239 million) of aid funding this week.
The Cumbre Vieja volcano has destroyed around 1,000 buildings. About 6,000 people have been evacuated from homes on the island out of a population of some 83,000.
